An electrical Single Line Diagram (SLD) is the core technical document in any solar PV permit submittal. It provides building inspectors, utility interconnection engineers, and installation crews with a simplified electrical schematic detailing how energy flows from the solar panels down to the main service panel and grid interconnection point.

Filing an accurate, NEC-compliant single line diagram is vital to passing AHJ plan checks on the first submittal. Below is the complete engineering framework used by our P.E. leads to draft jurisdiction-ready solar schematics.

1. Core Components Required in a Solar SLD

Under NEC Article 690 (Solar Photovoltaic Systems), every single line diagram submitted for permitting must explicitly illustrate and label the following electrical parameters:

  • PV Module Strings: Make, model, DC wattage rating, Voc (open-circuit voltage), Isc (short-circuit current), Vmp, Imp, string series count, and temperature coefficients.
  • Inverters / MLPE: String inverters or microinverters (e.g., Enphase IQ8, SolarEdge SE7600H), specifying maximum continuous AC output current and voltage ratings.
  • DC & AC Conductor Specifications: Wire gauge (e.g., #10 AWG USE-2/PV Wire, #8 THHN/THWN-2), insulation temperature ratings (75°C vs 90°C), and conduit types (EMT, PVC, FMC).
  • Overcurrent Protection Devices (OCPD): Fuse and breaker ratings (15A, 20A, 40A, 80A) protecting continuous loads.
  • Disconnect Switches: Rapid Shutdown Initiator (NEC 690.12), AC Disconnect Switch (NEC 690.13), and Utility Visible-Lockable Disconnect (when required by local utilities).
  • Point of Interconnection (POI): Main Panel Busbar rating, Main Service Disconnect rating, and backfed breaker location under NEC 705.12.

2. NEC 690.8 Conductor Sizing & Continuous Load Calculations

Under NEC 690.8(A)(1), PV source circuit maximum current must account for solar irradiance spikes by applying a 125% continuous rating multiplier to module short-circuit current ($I_{sc}$):

I_{max} = I_{sc} × 1.25

Then, under NEC 690.8(B)(1), the overcurrent protection device and minimum conductor ampacity must apply an additional 125% factor for continuous duty (total $1.25 \times 1.25 = 1.5625$ factor):

Required OCPD / Ampacity = I_{sc} × 1.5625

Conduit Temperature & Bundling Derating (NEC Table 310.15)

When conductors are routed across hot rooftops in EMT conduit exposed to direct sunlight, ambient temperature adjustment factors (NEC Table 310.15(B)(1)) and bundle adjustment factors (NEC Table 310.15(C)(1) for more than 3 current-carrying conductors) must be calculated to prevent insulation thermal degradation.

3. Applying the NEC 705.12(B) 120% Busbar Rule

One of the most frequent electrical plan check rejections is improper busbar sizing at the main panelboard. When backfeeding solar power via a breaker, NEC 705.12(B)(2)(0) mandates that:

(Main Breaker Amps + Solar Backfed Breaker Amps) ≤ Busbar Rating × 120%

Example Calculation:

  • Main Panel Busbar Rating = 200 Amps
  • Main Service Disconnect = 200 Amps
  • Max Allowable Combined Ampacity = $200 \text{A} \times 1.20 = 240 \text{ Amps}$
  • Max Solar Breaker Allowed = $240 \text{A} - 200 \text{A} = \mathbf{40 \text{ Amps}}$

If solar continuous current requires a 60A solar breaker, option solutions specified on the SLD include: derating the main service breaker to 175A ($175 + 60 = 235 \text{A} \le 240 \text{A}$), performing a Supply-Side Tap (NEC 705.11), or specifying a Main Panel Upgrade (MPU).

4. Rapid Shutdown Systems (NEC 690.12)

To protect emergency first responders, NEC 690.12 requires rapid shutdown of PV conductors outside the array boundary (defined as more than 1 ft from the array). Controlled conductors must drop to 30 volts or less within 30 seconds of initiation.

Microinverter architectures (Enphase) and DC-optimized systems (SolarEdge) inherently comply via module-level power electronics (MLPE). On the SLD schematic, the rapid shutdown initiation device (e.g., service disconnect or dedicated push-button switch) must be clearly designated with NEC Placard specifications.
